Active School Committee

Say Hello to the new Active schools committee of 2022-2023!

Our committee is made up of members from Third to Sixth Class. We have a very enthusiastic and hardworking A.S.F committee in the school. They were given many active roles such as organising the PE equipment store, conducting an audit of equipment, labelling the equipment, designing and looking after the active notice board, checking the suggestions folder and informing the other pupils on all Active Flag news and events. We have committee meetings and organise Active School events. We have also organised a very special active schools week.

Here are our PE equipment monitors. They make sure our P.E. press is kept neat and tidy.

And also meet our Playground Buddies PE equipment monitors. They ensure that the equipment that the Play Buddies use at break time is kept in order.

Our Active School Slogan

“Be Wise and Exercise”

We held an art competition to promote or active school slogan. Well done to all pupils who took part, and especially to our winners.

Active School Notice Board

Keep an eye on our Active schools notice board (inside the front door) to find out more! The Active School Committee invite the children and parents to suggest ideas to make our school a more active place. We have placed a suggestion folder on the board. Please feel free to share your ideas. 🙂

Pupil/Parent Questionnaires

We would like to thank all the parents and pupils in 1st, 3rd and 6th who completed our active school questionnaire. We conducted this survey to find out what they liked about P.E. at Gneeveguilla N.S. and what improvements could be made to make our Active School even better!. Overall it looks like we are doing a great job and we look forward to implementing some of your suggestions to make our school even more active!

Our questionnaire revealed the following information:

  • Our students enjoy P.E class, they wish that P.E. was longer and on more days. Some wished swimming could be availed by more classes and suggested more regular yoga classes.
  • Parents value P.E. highly as a subject.
  • Active Homework and the active break challenges was given a thumbs up by most student.
  • Parents value physical activity breaks throughout the school day.
  • Our walkway seems to be very popular with all students. Some suggested walks with different classes and more frequent walks to the local waterfall.
  • Some of our students would like the following: more equipment and space in the playground and some mentioned that would love an astro-turf! We might need to win the local GAA LOTTO but it’s always good to dream😊

What Club are you in?

The Active schools committee would like to thank the 5th and 6th class pupils who completed “The What Club are you in Survey?”, and a special well done to Rebecca and Eimear who won the best data poster.

Working with Local Agencies

Coaches

We are very lucky in Gneeveguilla N.S. to work with great coaches who visit our school. Coaches come throughout the year and visit different classes.

Basketball- We are very lucky to have Andrew Fitzgerald coming to GNS for years, teaching basketball skills from Seniors to Sixth class.

Football- We are very lucky to have Vince Cooper from Kerry GAA come in and coach the children from Junior Infants to 6th class every year.

Hurling- We also have a hurling coach Colm, who most often introduces the children to hurling for the first time.

Swimming – The children from senior classes attend swimming lessons at Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre for 6 sessions every academic year.

Spikeball-

Spikeball is an introduction to the volleyball game. It incorporates many of the skills that we see in volleyball but cleverly adapts the rules to make the game more inclusive, easier and FUN for all new and experienced participants. Prior to Covid, Mike McAuliffe trained 3rd to 6th Class every year and we were often very successful in the county finals held in Killarney each year, some teams even made it to Munster finals. We are extremely happy to have Mike back again with us in Term 3 this year. Thank you so much Mike!

Sam Maguire Visit- Thanks to Kerry Football players Paul Murphy and Shane Ryan for bringing The Sam Maguire cup to see us we hope to see them back with the cup again next year The children had lots of questions for their football champions!

Spring Clean Up – Every year all children at GNS participate in a Spring clean. We clean up our school grounds and the older students do a clean up around the village. Last year in conjunction with the local Tidy Towns committee, the senior classes helped create a biodiversity garden in the village! Well done everyone!
